The Inevitable Return of the Topic Meme!

Augh, the posting streak is over! Sadness. :( :( Alas, I've spent the bulk of the past week with the Inexplicably Persistent Headache of Doom leaving me without the brain capacity to do much more than work, sleep, and browse Tumblr like a zombie. Fortunately, I'm feeling a tad bit more functional this evening, and that means I owe [personal profile] punkpinkpower a post on...

(In which I interview myself for no good reason.)

Q. All right, Pocky, what gives? You keep calling this pairing the worst pairing ever, a train wreck, the pairing of doom...why are you so mean to your own ship?

A. Because I'm still baffled with myself and mentally shaking my head as to how this even happened. A single offhanded bullet point should not result in fully fledged bizarre angsty headcanon starring two characters who would have reasonable excuse to be close but who also have next to zero canon interaction. This is kind of the opposite of how I usually roll, and I've managed to perplex myself with it.

Q. Never mind that, is there EVER gonna be more In Silence?

A. Yes. Just...don't ask me when.

Q. Fine then, let's talk about the stuff that didn't get written yet. I hear there's porn.

A. ...Yeah, there's porn. It was a meme prompt awhile back, and it involves sex in the woods. I'm SO terrible at writing porn, though, that it may never get finished. As for the bits that DON'T have porn and are therefore more likely to get written, I've had ideas for their origin story as a couple, for Lauren's reunion with her Other Dad, for a bit in which Ji is an ass to Antonio because Feels, and for a bit in which the other Rangers sort of figure out what the deal really was.

Q. Ah yes, Antonio. Milliondreams once noted that Ji was to Jayden's dad as Antonio was to Jayden. And it blew your mind.

A. That it did! And there are definitely some parallels there. Although upon further thinkery, it might be more accurate to say that Jayden's dad is the one playing the Antonio role. He's the rebel of the two, after all, the unorthodox one, whereas Ji is more rule-abiding. And while the resemblance mostly ends there, it's enough to trigger a kind of PTSD gut-punch to Ji, and that's a lot of why he's such a dick to Antonio in the beginning. He doesn't want to see Jayden go down the same road that he did, because of how painfully it ended. But he also can't change Jayden's feelings, nor does he have the heart to deprive him of a chance at love. Because regardless of how painful it was for Ji, it was also the greatest thing that ever happened to him.

Q. Ji is the rule-abiding one, eh? Seems legit.

A. He is. See, somewhere along the line, some of the samurai families - including some members of the Shiba clan - branched off culturally and that's my excuse for why we have samurai who aren't Japanese but that's beside the point. And others stayed closer to the traditional ways. Ji was raised in Japan, and had a very traditional upbringing. It was kind of an eye opener when he got to the States and realized the guy who he had been raised to serve was an attractive leather-wearing white kid who was more interested in Ji as a makeout partner than as a servant.

Also, all the stuff Ji does in canon that seems incongruous with the 'uber-traditional mentor who wanders around in hakama spouting words of wisdom' persona? The motorcycles and electric guitars? All Jayden's dad's influence.

Q. What's with the names, or lack thereof?

A. Ah, well, it started as me being too lazy to give Jayden's dad a proper name, and then turned into a Thing. All the first-generation Samurai Rangers are addressed by title rather than name...because formality? IDK, it's all bullshit because I don't want to name them. Sorry. Also, Jayden's dad's last name at birth was not Shiba; he may have changed it later on post-some sort of commitment ceremony with Ji and/or to denote his role as the leader of the Shiba clan, but that's neither here nor there. Ji's legal surname IS, Shiba, and that's where Jayden and Lauren got it. Ji is actually legally the kids' adoptive father. In part to make life easier for him if something happened to their other dad. Which, it did. Sad. :(

Q. Where'd the title for In Silence come from?

A. AH. HAHA. HAHAHA. OK so the pairing has a soundtrack because I'm obsessive and terrible. The fic shares a title with this song. I'm realizing that the playlist itself didn't make it to the new laptop, otherwise I'd post the rest, but. Yeah.

Q. So, DID Ji ever get Lauren's letters?

A. Yes. He carefully intercepted each one, read them, and burned them.
