I really should be finishing my Alpha fic right now, seeing as how it's due in less than 12 hours and I still have to write TWO fight scenes, FML. But at any rate, here's a meme post.

[personal profile] tsukino_akume requested that I talk about how I got into fandom, particularly PR fandom.

It's morphin' time! )

Tomorrow's post is on my favorite fictional therapists, as requested by [personal profile] thesecondbatgirl . And Day 6's post will be on ROBOTS and why I love them, as requested by [livejournal.com profile] fly_buggy_fly .
pockysquirrel: (gia/emma snuggles)
[personal profile] angel_negra requested that I discuss diversity in the women of Power Rangers.

Hoo boy.  )
... I feel like this post sucks and makes no sense, but if there's any other diversity/feminism stuff about PR you think I should touch on, just ask in the comments. Sorry, Angel. ^^a

Tomorrow's post is the story of how I got into fandom, particularly PR fandom, as requested by [personal profile] tsukino_akume . And Day 5's post will be favorite fictional therapists, as requested by [personal profile] thesecondbatgirl .

My submission for Femslash Ficathon is like. Almost four times the required word count. Oops.

...At least it's done, though? And not terrible, I think?

So, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers hit the airwaves for the first time today. If you're reading this, you're most likely already well aware of all my feels about this show and how it's affected my life over the past 20 years. While I kind of wish the show's powers-that-be had lived up to all the #PR20 hype done more to honor the actual date, that hasn't stopped me from doing some low-key celebrating on various forms of social media while wearing an MMPR shirt and watching some episodes on Netflix.

I won't offer ficlets this time because I can't let myself get distracted so close to the Femslash Ficathon deadline <strike>and because I'm bad at responding to prompts anyway</strike>, but I'm more than happy to chat about any headcanon/fanon/meta stuff people may want to hear about.

Also, here's a random list of some of my top PR-related memories over the past 20 years.

- Reading an article about the show in Disney Adventures Magazine and deciding that this was relevant to my interests
- Waking up at 8:30 in the morning on Saturdays to watch when new episodes were on
- Taping the show on VHS and watching them over and over and over...
- Being in awe of the Command Center playset in the toystore, only to be told by my parents that it was too expensive ~_~
- MMPR:TM being released on my 11th birthday, getting nothing but movie merch for presents, and listening to the soundtrack over and over and over...
- Making my dad quiz me on PR trivia because I was convinced I knew EVERYTHING
- The massive brainbreak that accompanied the end of MMPR and the advent of Zeo. (I can still see those promos clear as day. "You gotta see it! It's coming!")
- Getting onto the internet in my dad's office and checking out all of the fansites
- Reading - and subsequently writing - my first fanfic
- Crying in front of my television at Countdown to Destruction
- Re-discovering the show in college, watching DT with my ex
- Re-RE-discovering the show in 2009, when I saw an ad for a PR-centric RPG on InsaneJournal. Wrote my character application on the plane home from Japan, joined, and thereby met [personal profile] rivulet027 , who proceeded to drag me back into the fandom full-stop.
- Meeting my husband for the first time and realizing he was The One when he invoked the name of my favorite fandom with no provocation whatsoever from me and told me he had PR action figures in his cubicle at work.
- Flying across the country for the sole purpose of PMC2 and getting to meet Riv, [personal profile] thesecondbatgirl , and so many other awesome people face to face for the first time.
- Meeting, having my headcanon affirmed by, doing the ugly cry in front of, and ultimately hugging my all-time hero David Yost at NPS Live.
- Giving directions to Johnny Yong Bosch at Genericon
- Having my best friends from the fandom attend my wedding...and, naturally, morphing with them in the photobooth.
- Couchcon 2013, complete with the Gokaiger marathon, the Porner, and the questionable but tasty Skittles vodka.

...And many more to come, I'm sure. :)

Happy Rangerversary, everybody!

All right, so, a lot's been going down in PR-land of late, that shouldn't be news to anyone. And I have a lot of feels about it, that also shouldn't be a surprise. My opinions are unpopular. I'm going to talk about them anyway.

Sure, it's mad shitty how Saban is handling this whole situation. I won't dispute that. But it is even shittier how a large chunk of the fandom is handling it. I won't say 'everyone' because I know that's not true. But a large enough chunk to give the fandom as a whole the type of representation that I don't like. Sure, it's okay to be disappointed that this character or that one won't be appearing in Super Megaforce. And it's okay to be upset with some of the decisions Saban is making. It is NOT okay to act like you're entitled to the cameos you want to see and that an actor's decision to not participate is of some kind of personal offense to you. It's like some of these fans are failing to realize that actors are ACTUAL FUCKING PEOPLE, with actual lives and actual legitimate reasons for making the decisions they make. They do NOT exist at the fandom's beck and call. They don't OWE us cameos, they don't OWE us convention appearances, THEY DON'T OWE US A GODDAMN THING and we should be nothing less than GRATEFUL for any time out of their lives that they decide to take to interact with us.

And all entitled douchebaggery aside, I am actually glad to hear that some of these characters - Rocky and Billy in particular - won't be seen in Super Megaforce. Why? Because given what we know about how these characters have been handled in the past, coupled with the general quality of writing and characterization in the series right now, there is absolutely NO WAY that canon would do justice to what I want for these characters and their post-series lives. We have already seen evidence that the series does not know how to treat these characters right, and Steve Cardenas came right out and said he was dissatisfied with the amount of character development he would have been offered in a Super Megaforce appearance. I respect him greatly for taking that into consideration, especially since I'm sure it's come to his attention over the past decade that, had he actually appeared in Forever Red, he would've been relegated to the role of Tommy's butler. We all dodged a bullet when that failed to become canon, and I shudder to think what might have become of Rocky this time around. Billy, meanwhile, was subjected to the biggest shitshow of a send-off there ever was, and while I'll grant that they had to come up with a cover for his sudden departure, they could easily have done better.

But what might or might not have become of Billy in canon is not the most important factor to consider here. David Yost has publically shared what his experience working on PR was like, and having heard his story, not only do I not fault him for deciding not to return, I applaud him for the decision. I don't claim to know the man beyond what he has chosen to share with the world through his general public presence in the fandom, and through having met him at NPS Live, but based on the things he has chosen to share, I would not even be able to enjoy a Billy cameo because I would be too busy worrying about David's emotional state. I can easily ignore most of fandom's cameo-related whining. But I will personally tear anyone I catch complaining about this decision a brand new asshole.

(Once again, that man manages to bring out the absolute worst of my fangirl tendencies.)

(Also, I would like to say that I think the Tweet in which he announced his decision may be the single most masterfully composed Tweet I have ever seen. THE POTSHOT ABOUT THERE BEING POOR GRAMMAR IN THE INVITATION EMAIL. PURE. GOLD.)

So that's my 25 or so cents on the matter. Hopefully this post has worked all the bile out of my system. If there's any left, maybe I'll throw together a rant about how wrong everything about Star Trek Into Darkness has turned out to be. I hope that doesn't become necessary.

...It's a sad day in Pocky-land when I look at my online life and realize that Transformers is the least dysfunctional of my fandoms right now. How does that even happen?

On a lighter but largely related note, I am now in possession of the Holy Grail my very own Legacy Morpher, and it is THE BEST TOY IN THE HISTORY OF TOYS. I can't put it down because holding the damn thing is so immensely satisfying. Quite possibly the best 60 bucks I've ever spent.

Back when I was doing season reviews of all the PR, I made note of the fact that Nathaniel Lees, Jungle Fury's Master Mao, turned up in the latter Matrix movies as Mifune, wherein he proceeded to swear a lot and kick ass with a big robot exo-suit until being tragically killed by mechanical squids. WELL. Upon rewatching The Matrix Revolutions last night, I spotted another familiar face. Apparently Rene Naufahu did a bit part in the same two movies, plus the video game!

Two PR mentors defending Zion together? Screw Neo; this CLEARLY is why they won.

(And while we're on the subject of Matrix movies, Zoe from Firefly also makes an appearance, a fact I totally missed on prior viewings due to having never seen Firefly at the time. And then I found out she's also been voicing a robot on Transformers: Prime, a show whose cast is also a cornucopia of fandomsmash. Seriously, this shit is like candy to me.)

Overall mixed feelings about Megaforce aside, allow me to hop right aboard the "Gia/Emma is the BEST THING EVER" bandwagon. There should be more fic. And I have a writing slump that needs to be gotten out of. Solution? Throw some Gia/Emma prompts my way, and maybe I will write things?

(I also still have all of the headcanon in the world about Troy, but the show's frustrating lack of chardev leaves me feeling like I still don't know enough about him to write him. B|)
pockysquirrel: (Default)
It's been over 24 hours and two viewings, and I think I'm going to have to resign myself to the fact that a cogent reaction post to yesterday's Megaforce premiere is just not going to happen. I can't. There are way too many thoughts and all of them are interrupted by flail and squee to the point of no longer making sense. The headcanon machine has gone wild over Troy (Why is he dreaming of Rangers and just what is this adversity in his past that we keep getting allusions to?) and Gosei. (But at least I got the canon link with Zordon that I wanted. LET THERE BE FIC.) And I love the girls and will continue shipping them together with impunity until the show gives me something else to work with.

Everything was nostalgia and nothing hurt. <3
pockysquirrel: (flail like a flaily thing)

Lately I've been feeling fairly blah and unmotivated for some reason, or possibly a combination of several probable reasons, whatever, I don't particularly care and the only reason I bring it up now is because today was a beautiful day in the fandom neighborhood and I feel SO MUCH BETTER NOW.

Point the first: [livejournal.com profile] fly_buggy_fly found a bunch of super old RP logs from 2006(!!!!) and nostalgia like WHOA.

Point the second: I spent all day emailing with [personal profile] thesecondbatgirl about dark AUs and porn and dark AUs WITH porn in a (successful) effort to distract one another from work suck.

Point the third: Speaking of porn,HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS EXISTED UNTIL TODAY? So what if I'm 5 years late to the party, I do not care. It is GLORIOUS.

Point the fourth: And it has also been brought to my attention that JDF broke a bunch of boards after jumping out of a plane, thereby breaking the world record for breaking the most boards after jumping out of a plane. I am more surprised that someone else set a record for this in the first place than I am that JDF did it.

Point the fifth: MEGAFORCE CLIPS MEGAFORCE CLIPS HOLY CRAP WHY ISN'T IT SATURDAY YET You guys want to hear all my uncensored thoughts about these, don't you? Of course you do.

I'm hanging out with [livejournal.com profile] fly_buggy_fly today; we're chilling on my couch and watching assorted nonsense on Netflix. Right now the deal is, for every episode of MLP:FiM I agree to watch (Say nothing, just because I'm watching doesn't mean I will ever be sucked into the fandom.), she agrees to watch an episode of Power Rangers. I feel vaguely victorious because of this. But really, the important part is that it resulted in this being said:

"That's about the extent of my knowledge [of PR], you make them gay and you like the yellow one."

That is...probably the single most apt description of my fandom I have ever seen.

Somehow, it just became my headcanon that Ji is a semi-closeted fan of these guys:

He's roughly the right age. He's ostensibly from Japan. He likes leather and guitars. IT MAKES SENSE TO ME, OKAY?

...Now there needs to be fic wherein someone (Kevin. Or Mike. Or both. Either would be hilarious.) turns on Ji's stereo and promptly has his mind blown.

Sooooo, you know you have too many WIPs when:

While rifling through my files and pondering what to work on next, I came across a fic that 1, was about 98% complete, and 2, I had forgotten about entirely. I am somewhat certain it was either prompted by or intended to be giftfic for somebody, since I never in a million years would have decided to write it unprovoked. But the reasons for its existence seem to have been lost to the ages. Whoops.

Anyhoot, stay tuned because I'll be posting it shortly.
