It's May!

pockysquirrel: (the two greatest characters EVAR)
And May is Mental Health Month, so it's time for my annual offer to make use of my education and chosen career for the general benefit of fandom. Ask me about mental health stuff, friends list! I will answer anything put to me, to the best of my ability. That means both fandom-related stuff ("Do you think [insert character here] could have [insert psychiatric condition here]", "How can I portray mental health issues more accurately in my fanfic?" etc.) and IRL stuff ("What's your opinion of this antidepressant medication?" "Is this an issue I should be seeking help for?" "I'm worried about my friend/family member, what can I do?") and anything in between.

If you feel more comfortable asking something privately, send me a PM or comment anonymously. But unless you flat-out ask me not to, I will be posting answers publicly. Because chances are, if you're asking, you're not the only one it's relevant to.

So let's raise some awareness, kick stigma to the curb, and perhaps even have a little fun, eh?
pockysquirrel: (meme sheep)
[personal profile] angel_negra asked if doing this meme was a good idea. And overall, I'd have to say yes. It's given me the opportunity to think about and post about some interesting topics. And hey, if I somehow contributed to the existence of more Ji/Jayden's dad fic in the universe, that is an unexpected but welcome bonus.

I'm a bit annoyed with myself for not managing to post every day, but as I had mentioned before, there's been some recent medical weirdness that's rather nerfed my motivation on some of the days in question.

(Relatedly, if you are prone to spine-related shenanigans, I would NOT recommend attempting Couch to 5k, as I'm pretty sure attempting to force my weirdly built body to run is how I have fucked up my neck. End PSA.)

But all whining aside, since I didn't get to all the topics this month, the only logical thing to do is continue. Maybe something like one post per week, or whenever I get bored.
pockysquirrel: (facepalm)
Due to my getting home late from the ER job and being le tired, today's topic meme post will be postponed.
pockysquirrel: (NaNo2013)
On a lark, I went back and re-read all the NaNo related posts I made back when I had my first go-round in 2008. And I discovered two things.

1) This is proving to be MUCH easier than last time.
2) Wow, I was a whiny bitch.

So yeah. As of the end of day 9, my total word count is sitting pretty at 17209. I participated in NaNoThon today with great success, coming in with a daily total of 3665 words. I have also realized that there is no possible way I'm going to get to the end of the plot by the end of this month. Not sure yet if I'm going to continue writing into December, or shelve it for a few months and write the rest come Camp NaNo time in the spring. I figure I'll cross that bridge when I come to it.

Highlights of the month so far include:
- A one-off line about a character's ratty old sandals which I suspect is going to turn into a running gag.
- My personal favorite character and resident giant woob rushing in to save his future boyfriend from certain death whilst wielding the infamous Traveling Shovel of Death.
- Throwing my protagonist off a building only to find out that, surprise, her super-suit has WINGS.
- Writing a scene and realizing after the fact that I have just unintentionally foreshadowed the end of the novel.

And low points:
- A day during which I wrote next to nothing due to working for over 14 straight hours. I love my second job, and I love the extra money, but I'm going to be ruing Mondays for the rest of the month.
- The constant, nagging feeling that 90 to 95% of everything that I've written thus far is complete and utter shit.
pockysquirrel: (gia/emma snuggles)
So first of all, this is a thing. ) We'll see how much of this actually gets written and when, though.

Second, I am on [personal profile] thesecondbatgirl 's couch right now, and it is WONDEROUS. Well worth the effort that it took to get here, which involved delays on the ground, delays in the air, almost having to land elsewhere because the plane was being asked to hold outside Atlanta and we were running out of fuel, ultimately landing 90 minutes late, and let us not forget the underlying reason for all this, FLYING THROUGH A HUGENORMOUS THUNDERSTORM. If you have flown in inclement weather before, you know what I mean. If you haven't, I do not recommend it. You never want to look out the window of your plane and see what looks like a scene out of The Matrix. Seriously, pure black clouds with lightning arcing between them, and occasionally the lights of the city underneath. I was kind of worried I was going to die, but it was also really, really cool.

But now I'm here with some of my favorite people and we're having an all-day Gokaiger marathon with wine, and coming up with all the absurd porny plot bunnies we want to see but will likely never write ourselves. All is right with the world.

Two things learned from the weekend:

1) Don't go to gaming cons when you're not a gamer.
2) Nerds throw the best parties.

Basically, the entire reason this happened was because a very old and presently Boston-dwelling friend of mine decided to gift the Yeti and I PAX passes for Christmas and offered up her house for us to crash at. To make a long story short: Biggest fucking con ever. HORDES of nerds the likes of which I've never seen before. Custom-painting D&D minis and playing vintage arcade games = fun. Burning all my spoons by hustling through crowds and hanging around with a bunch of people I don't know = tiring. And as I said, I'm not a gamer, so a lot of what was going on didn't hold my interest. Xyc entered a Magic: The Gathering tournament and had a blast, though, so I suppose overall it was a worthwhile endeavor. And then there was a spectacularly bitchin' afterparty that involved a disco basement, the worst video games I've ever seen, horse masks, giant foam hands, cornhole, guys rubbing butts, obscure British drinking games, a booty-drop competition, and me being a classy mofo by not only killing an entire bottle of cheap terrible wine by myself, but also drinking said wine out of a red Solo cup.

Nerds definitely throw the best parties. And speaking of...next stop, COUCHCON!!!! Cannot freaking wait!

Point the first: I'm now more than a week post-op and have been feeling a lot more normal for the past few days. I've been back working since Wednesday, graduated from the hydrocodone to regular ibuprofen and haven't needed any pain medication whatsoever since Thursday night. The incisions are still a pain in the ass. They don't hurt at all until I do something to remind myself that they're there. And it's stupid stuff that sets them off, like...wearing most of my pants. Or trying to sleep on my side. It's super annoying, so I am not-so-patiently waiting for the damn things to heal up. On the flip side, I ate a bunch of junk food this weekend and had NO pain whatsoever, so I guess the surgery was a success!

Point the second: This weekend was Genericon weekend, ever and always the official kickoff to con season! And 2013 has got a BIG con season. Genericon is to be followed by PAX East in a couple weeks, then Couchcon in April, possibly Anime Boston in May (assuming my sister-in-law is able to make it), and then my husband's first ever Star Trek convention in June. I might be overcompensating for missing PMC last year JUST a little bit.

But yeah, enough rambling, have a con report!

Cut for long and longness, as usual )

This didn't end up being quite the marathon I had hoped it would be, as today was for some reason a lot less pain and a lot more sleeping. So after nodding off a few times, I gave up on watching anything that needed my actual attention and put the Food Network on instead. Oh well. It's still much more of this series than I've ever seen before.

Pain Level: 2.5
Number of Hydrocodones Consumed: Only 1!
Overall Entertainment Level: 5.5

Comments: This is one of those shows in which I care a lot more about the characters than I do about the premise of the show itself. Chasing demons? Don't care. Wiseass banter? Yes please. I didn't get nearly far enough to see Castiel either, and I'd like to give that a shot just to see what all the fuss is about. So how about it, flist? What are some episodes with him in them that I can watch without being too hideously confused about what's going on?

Overall, still fairly baffled by the amount of enthusiasm people have for this show, but I can see the appeal of writing All The Fic about these characters.
pockysquirrel: (Default)
First day of post-op recovery consisted of napping, watching the latest episode of Megaforce, of course, and then a Doctor Who marathon. I was told to start with the Ninth Doctor, so that is where I started, and burned through all thirteen episodes today.

Pain Level: 3.5 - 4
Number of Hydrocodones Consumed: 3
Overall entertainment Level: 7

Comments: Nobody does it quite like the Brits, do they? This show is definitely smoking a great deal of RJ's weed, what with the farting aliens and gas mask zombies and homicidal reality show robots and living spaceships and all, but that certainly isn't a bad thing. I can see why so many people in my life enjoy the series as much as they do. The dialogue is flawless, the soundtrack is stellar, and there seems to be a well-balanced mix of angst and WTF-British-comedy going on at all times. And I am utterly convinced that the Doctor, Jack, and Rose had a three-way between episodes 10 and 11. I could have done without Rose's whiny dippy boyfriend, though. He strikes me as a fairly pointless character. But Jack getting repeatedly stripped naked was a nice touch.

All in all, I don't imagine I'll be joining the fandom anytime soon, but it's definitely a good watch.

TL;DR, surgery day went way better than I expected it would.

But details are under the cut, if anyone cares )

So yeah, that's my story. Minus one nonvital organ, plus a few internal clips and officially on the mend. Next on the agenda: Amusing myself with some of the things people recced for me, likely to be followed by some "Pocky watches things on pain meds" review posts.
pockysquirrel: (facepalm)
TL;DR, life sucks lately, and the base reason for that is that I have a failboat gallbladder that is going to be surgically evicted from my body in two days. Given that I have a pretty high level of medical anxiety to begin with and zero experience with this sort of thing, I am freaking the fuck out. I mean, come on. I have never had ANY type of surgery before. I still have my wisdom teeth because I found out nitrous oxide doesn't work on me and then had a panic attack in the chair when they went to take them out. The first time I had so much as an IV was when I went to the ER and found out my gallbladder sucks in the first place! And now they are about to remove one of my organs? Yes sir, I am freaking out. Damn right I am freaking out.

But my whining and misery are not the real point of this post, believe it or not. The point is that when I am post-op, doped up on pain meds and rooted to my couch for the following 4 or 5 days, I am going to be super bored. Help me, friends list; you're my only hope. I need you to rec me things. Rec me those awesome super-long fics that I never have time to read. Rec me those shows on Netflix that I would probably really enjoy but have never gotten around to watching. I'm posting this now in hopes of having a good, solid list of stuff by surgery day. I will be a captive audience for almost a week. Coming out on the other side with a new fandom or two would truly be making the best of a shitty situation.

And have I mentioned lately that I love you guys? Just saying. <3<3<3
pockysquirrel: (flail like a flaily thing)

Lately I've been feeling fairly blah and unmotivated for some reason, or possibly a combination of several probable reasons, whatever, I don't particularly care and the only reason I bring it up now is because today was a beautiful day in the fandom neighborhood and I feel SO MUCH BETTER NOW.

Point the first: [livejournal.com profile] fly_buggy_fly found a bunch of super old RP logs from 2006(!!!!) and nostalgia like WHOA.

Point the second: I spent all day emailing with [personal profile] thesecondbatgirl about dark AUs and porn and dark AUs WITH porn in a (successful) effort to distract one another from work suck.

Point the third: Speaking of porn,HOW DID I NOT KNOW THIS EXISTED UNTIL TODAY? So what if I'm 5 years late to the party, I do not care. It is GLORIOUS.

Point the fourth: And it has also been brought to my attention that JDF broke a bunch of boards after jumping out of a plane, thereby breaking the world record for breaking the most boards after jumping out of a plane. I am more surprised that someone else set a record for this in the first place than I am that JDF did it.

Point the fifth: MEGAFORCE CLIPS MEGAFORCE CLIPS HOLY CRAP WHY ISN'T IT SATURDAY YET You guys want to hear all my uncensored thoughts about these, don't you? Of course you do.
