Happy New Year, Flist! Topic Meme: Day 1

pockysquirrelIt's 2014, woot woot! I have resolutions and goals and shit like that, but I'm not going to post about them because every time I do, I end up looking back on that post and feeling inordinately guilty about whatever I didn't succeed at doing. :P
Anyhoot, there was a ridiculous New Year's party at my mom's house last night, complete with ridiculous amounts of alcohol, of which I consumed entirely too much. I suspect I'm getting too old to be partying that hard, but there's something deeply satisfying about getting drunk as hell in the company of nearly all your favorite people.
And now, without further ado, it's time to start the topic meme! For day 1,tsukino_akume asked me to explain the origin of my username, and I am glad to do so because this story never fails to delight me with its derpiness.
Waaaaay back in 2006, I went to Genericon for the first time. I've posted about Genericon before; it's the small but wonderful con run by, for, and at a local university in my area. The inimitable Buggy and our other friend Rini came to visit for the occasion; we (somewhat poorly) cosplayed, derped about, and generally got our nerd on. As the hour grew late, we were lazing around in a lecture hall turned karaoke room listening to people sing tunes from anime of varying stripes and getting progressively more silly from a potent combination of sugar and boredom.
As such, I decided somehow that it would be a good idea to crawl underneath a desk. And that it would also be a good idea to then reach up from under said desk to snitch some pocky that was sitting on top of it. Exposed to the bewildering sight of a disembodied hand appearing on the desk, groping around for the pocky box and then vanishing with it, my friends looked under the desk to see what was going on. And there I was, crouched on the floor, nibbling at a pocky stick:
In the midst of the ensuing laughter, someone exclaimed "It's a pocky squirrel!"
Odd as this may sound, I can't think of a thing that has ever summed me up quite so neatly as the combination of that photo and that phrase. I loved it, I embraced it, and I've been using it as my default username for everything ever since.
Two different people requested stuff for day 3 and no one for day 2, so I'll just bump one of them up for tomorrow's meme. Day 2's post will be on favorite animals (with bonus cute pictures!) as requested bypunkpinkpower , and day 3 will be diversity in the women of Power Rangers as requested by angel_negra . And I'm still actively soliciting for about 15 more topics, so feel free to comment here if you'd like to suggest one.
